Fernando de Silva y Álvarez de Toledo (born October 27, 1714 – died November 15, 1776) was a very important Spanish politician and general. He was also known as the 12th Duke of Alba. He even served as the Prime Minister of Spain for a short time in 1754.
Life and Career
Fernando de Silva was often called the Duke of Huéscar. He lived during a time called the Age of Enlightenment. This was a period when people focused on new ideas, science, and thinking for themselves. Fernando de Silva was friends with Jean-Jacques Rousseau, a famous writer and thinker from that time.
Important Roles
Fernando de Silva held many important jobs during his life.
- From 1746 to 1749, he worked as the Spanish ambassador to France. An ambassador is like a country's representative in another country.
- In 1753, he became the Mayordomo mayor. This was a very high-ranking position, meaning he was in charge of the Royal Household for the King of Spain.
- In 1754, he was chosen to be the director of the Real Academia Española. This is a special organization that helps protect and improve the Spanish language. He held this job until he passed away in 1776.
- He also served as the Chief Minister of Spain from April 9 to May 15, 1754. This role is similar to being the head of the government.
Family and Legacy
When Fernando de Silva passed away, his granddaughter, María del Pilar de Silva, 13th Duchess of Alba, became the next Duke of Alba. She was a good friend of Francisco de Goya, a very famous Spanish painter. Goya visited their home many times and even painted some of his famous works there, like El verano (The Summer) and La vendimia (The Grape Harvest).
Family Life
Fernando de Silva married Ana María Alvarez de Toledo y de Portugal. She was the daughter of the 9th Count of Oropesa. They had one son together.
- Francisco de Paula de Silva Mendoza y Toledo, 10th Duke of Huéscar (1733–1770). Sadly, he passed away before his father.
- Francisco had one daughter, María del Pilar de Silva, 13th Duchess of Alba (1762–1802). She later became the 13th Duchess of Alba.
