Fernwood is a small community in Idaho, United States. It's called an "unincorporated community" because it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's managed by the county. Fernwood is found in the southeastern part of Benewah County, right near State Highway 3.
Even though it's small, Fernwood shares a K-6 school with nearby communities like Clarkia, Santa, and Emida. This means younger students from these areas all go to school together in Fernwood. For middle school and high school, all students travel to St. Maries.
In 2020, about 702 people lived in Fernwood.
A Look at Fernwood's Past
Long before any European settlers arrived, the land around Fernwood was home to the Coeur d'Alene Tribe. They lived here for thousands of years. The Coeur d'Alene people had their own name for this area: Epschssups'n, which means "It has a little tail."
In 1960, the population of Fernwood was estimated to be around 250 people.
