Ferry Corsten's Music Journey
Starting Out as a DJ
Ferry Corsten grew up in Rotterdam, Netherlands. When he was a child, he loved listening to a Dutch radio show called "The Soulshow." This show played different kinds of electronic music, like disco and soul. If he liked a song, he would go buy the record.
His first time DJing was at school parties when he was 15. As a teenager, he saved money to buy his first keyboard. He did this by washing cars and selling mixed tapes to kids in his neighborhood. He was inspired by other DJs like Ferry Maat and Ben Liebrand.
When he was just 16, he released a record with some friends. In the 1990s, he started making his own music in Rotterdam. He began with underground hardcore gabber tracks. Later, he moved into club-house and trance music. During these years, Corsten also studied to become an electrical engineer. In 1995, at age 21, he won the "De Grote Prijs van Nederland" award. This award recognized his important work in Dutch electronic dance music.
In 1996, Corsten's song "Don't be Afraid" became popular in the United Kingdom Singles Chart. He released this song under the name Moonman. It reached number 46. This was his first big success in Europe as a solo artist. In 1997, he released "Interspace" with Peter Nijborn. He also put out his first songs as Pulp Victim, "I'm Losing Control" and "Dreams Last For Long." A year later, "The World" came out, featuring vocals by Maire Brennan.
Also in 1997, Corsten and his partner Robert Smit started a music label called Tsunami. They worked with a Dutch dance company called Purple Eye Entertainment. This partnership also led to another label called Polar State.
Big Hits and Remixes (1998–2002)
In 1998, Corsten made a song called "Air" under the name Albion. It was released by Platipus Records and became very popular. Famous DJs like John Digweed and Paul Oakenfold played it. The same year, Corsten finished his song "Out of the Blue." This song was released in 1999 under the name System F. It became a worldwide hit and reached the top 20 in the UK. His next song, "Cry," also reached the UK Top 20.
"Out of The Blue" helped define Corsten's trance sound. He also worked with other artists on big hits. These included Gouryella's "Gouryella" (with Tiësto) and Veracocha's "Carte Blanche." "Gouryella" was released in 1999 and became a huge hit around the world. It reached the top 15 in the UK. The next Gouryella song, "Walhalla," also charted worldwide. Both songs sold very well and were certified Gold.
Because of his success, many artists asked Corsten to remix their songs. He remixed "The Orange Theme" by Cygnus X and "Liberation" by Matt Darey. He also remixed "Madagascar" by Art of Trance. Other famous songs he remixed included "Adagio for Strings" by William Orbit, "Universal Nation" by Push, and songs by Faithless and Moby.
