A Look Back in Time: Fertile's History
Fertile has an interesting past! The area was first known as Rhodes Mill. This name came from William Rhodes, who moved there in 1856 and built a house.
Nearby, someone tried to create a new town called Fontanelle. However, local people often called it Putsey.
The city of Fertile was officially started in 1877. It got its name because the soil in the valley was very good for farming. Fertile became an incorporated city in 1908. This means it officially became a town with its own local government.
The original Rhodes Mill building is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is an important historical site.
