Fessenden is a small town in North Dakota, United States. It is the main town, or county seat, of Wells County. The town was started in 1893. It is also known for hosting the Wells County Fair. In 2020, about 462 people lived there.

History of Fessenden

Fessenden began in 1893. This happened when the Minneapolis, St. Paul and Sault Ste. Marie Railroad built its tracks through the area. A year later, in 1894, Fessenden became the county seat. This meant it was the main town for Wells County. The county courthouse was built in 1895. The town was named after a person called Surveyor General Fessenden. He had helped map out the county.

In 2007, a building called the Fessenden Auditorium collapsed. Later, in 2009, a fire caused damage to some businesses. Fessenden celebrated its 100th birthday in July 1993.
