History of Fieldon
Fieldon was first settled in the 1830s by a man named John Field. It started as a busy trading post. Travelers along the Illinois River would stop here to buy and sell goods.
Growth and Change Over Time
In 1853, a railroad was built through nearby Jerseyville. This helped Fieldon grow even more. During the Civil War, Fieldon was a safe stop on the Underground Railroad. This was a secret network that helped people escape slavery. The town also sent soldiers to fight in the war.
In the early 1900s, Fieldon had many industries. These included places that canned food and sawmills. After the Great Depression, the town's main focus shifted to farming. Fieldon's population was highest in the 1980s, with 299 people. Since then, the number of people living there has slowly gone down.
