Filopaludina javanica is a type of large freshwater snail. It has a gill to breathe underwater and an operculum, which is like a little door that closes its shell. This snail is an aquatic gastropod mollusk and belongs to the family Viviparidae. Sometimes, it is also called Idiopoma javanica.

Scientists have found two main types, or subspecies, of Filopaludina javanica:

  • Filopaludina javanica javanica (named by von dem Busch in 1844)
  • Filopaludina javanica continentalis (named by Brandt in 1974)

This snail lives in several countries in Southeast Asia. You can find it in Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Laos. It also lives in Peninsular Malaysia and parts of Indonesia, like the islands of Sumatra and Java.

What This Snail Looks Like

The shell of an adult Filopaludina javanica is usually about 30 to 35 millimeters tall. That's about the length of a small paperclip!

Where This Snail Lives and What It Does

Filopaludina javanica likes to live in freshwater environments. You can often find these snails in ponds, rice fields, and irrigation channels. These are all places with slow-moving or still water.

Sometimes, these snails can have tiny parasites living inside them. One example is a type of flatworm called Echinostoma echinatum.
