History of Findley Lake

How Findley Lake Was Made

The area around Findley Lake was first settled by a man named Alexander Findley. He was from Northern Ireland and had fought in the War of 1812. In 1811, he bought land near where Findley Lake is today. In 1815, he built a dam to power his mill. This dam connected two smaller ponds, creating the larger Findley Lake we know today. A community quickly grew and thrived around these mills.

Lakeside Assembly and Summer Fun

From 1895 to 1915, a special place called the Lakeside Assembly brought many visitors to Findley Lake. It was on the southwest shore and offered programs similar to the famous Chautauqua Institution. A minister named Rev. C. G. Langdon started the Assembly in 1895. Its first president was Dr. F. E. Lilley, and later, American Civil War hero Ebenezer Skellie took over.

Visitors could reach the Assembly by two steamboats named the Silver Spray and the Daisy. For many years, a summer camp called Camp Findley also operated in the hamlet.
