Fiorenzo Angelini (born August 1, 1916 – died November 22, 2014) was an important Italian cardinal in the Roman Catholic Church. He was known for his work helping people in health care. He led the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Health Care Workers in the Roman Curia, which is like the Pope's main government. He became a cardinal in 1991. For a short time, he was the oldest living cardinal in the world.

Early Life and Church Service

Fiorenzo Angelini was born in Rome, Italy. He studied to become a priest at several important schools in Rome. He was ordained, meaning he became a priest, on February 3, 1940.

After becoming a priest, he worked in churches in Rome until 1956. He also served as a chaplain, a type of spiritual leader, for a Catholic group called Azione Cattolica from 1945 to 1959. From 1947 to 1954, he was the Master of Pontifical Ceremonies. This meant he helped organize important events for the Pope. He also worked for Roman hospitals for a few months.

Rising Through the Ranks

On June 27, 1956, Pope Pius XII made him a Titular Bishop of Messene. A titular bishop is a bishop who does not lead a specific area. Angelini became a bishop on July 29, 1956.

In 1959, he started the Italian Catholic Doctors' Association. This group helped Catholic doctors in Italy. He also took part in the Second Vatican Council (1962–1965). This was a very important meeting that changed many things in the Catholic Church.

On January 6, 1977, Pope Paul VI made him an Auxiliary Bishop of Rome. This meant he helped the main bishop of Rome. Later, Pope John Paul II made him an Archbishop and put him in charge of a new group. This group was called the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Health Care Workers. He became its first president on February 16, 1985.

Cardinal and Later Years

Pope John Paul II made him a Cardinal-Deacon on June 28, 1991. His special church was Santo Spirito in Sassia.

As the leader of the Vatican's health care efforts, Cardinal Angelini was very influential. He oversaw many health institutions in Italy. He was sometimes called Sua Sanità, which means "His Health." He had connections with important Italian politicians. For example, he was close to Giulio Andreotti, who was a Prime Minister of Italy many times. Cardinal Angelini also celebrated the wedding of the daughter of another politician, Paolo Cirino Pomicino.

When he turned 80 on August 1, 1996, Cardinal Angelini could no longer vote in papal conclaves. A conclave is when cardinals meet to choose a new Pope. He retired from his role as President of Pastoral Care of Health Care Workers on December 31, 1996. On February 26, 2002, he became a cardinal priest. This is a different rank for cardinals.

Cardinal Angelini also asked for a special process to begin for French scientist Jérôme Lejeune. This process is called beatification, which is a step towards becoming a saint. In 1997, Angelini started the International Institute for Research on the Face of Christ in Rome.

On July 28, 2013, he became the oldest cardinal in the world after Cardinal Ersilio Tonini passed away. However, he was later surpassed by Loris Francesco Capovilla, who became a cardinal in 2014 and was older.

Angelini and Pope Pius XII

Cardinal Angelini greatly admired Pope Pius XII throughout his life. In 1959, Angelini published a book about Pope Pius XII's ideas on medicine. This book was the only collection of the Pope's speeches and views on health. Angelini strongly supported the idea of Pope Pius XII becoming a saint.

Pope Pius XII had appointed Angelini as a bishop in 1956. In a sermon in 1992, Angelini said that his career had been affected because he spoke positively about Pope Pius XII.
