The First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine is a very important job in the Ukrainian government. This person helps the Prime Minister lead the country. If the Prime Minister is away, the First Deputy Prime Minister steps in to do their job. This role has been around since 1991, growing from an older government position.

Other deputy prime ministers can also help if the First Deputy Prime Minister is busy. A special office called the Secretariat of the Cabinet of Ministers helps them with their daily tasks. When someone becomes First Deputy Prime Minister, they have to take a special promise, called an oath. This happens at a meeting of the Verkhovna Rada, which is Ukraine's parliament. If they don't take the oath, they cannot take the job.
