Fish Lake Reservoir facts for kids

Fish Lake Reservoir, also known as Fish Lake Flowage, is a large lake in Minnesota. It was created by building a dam on the Beaver River. This lake is part of a bigger water system that includes the Cloquet and Saint Louis River. You can find it about 20 miles northwest of Duluth, Minnesota.

Locally, many people just call it "Fish Lake." It stretches across three townships: Fredenberg Township, Canosia Township, and Grand Lake Township. All of these are in southern Saint Louis County, Minnesota.

About Fish Lake Reservoir

Fish Lake Reservoir is a man-made lake, which means it was created by people. It covers about 3,526 acres. The lake was formed by holding back the water of the Beaver River. This makes it a reservoir, which is like a giant storage area for water.

How Big is Fish Lake?

The lake itself is about 3,071 acres in size. A large part of it, about 75% or 2,303 acres, is called the "littoral area." This means it's the shallow part of the lake near the shore where sunlight reaches the bottom. This area is usually where many plants and small creatures live. The deepest part of Fish Lake Reservoir is about 36 feet deep.

Getting to the Lake

There are a couple of places where people can easily get to Fish Lake Reservoir. These are called "public access" points.

• One public access is on the north side of the lake. It is owned and managed by Minnesota Power. You can find it at the end of Township Road 285.
• Another public access is on the far west side of the lake. This one is managed by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR). It's located near Saint Louis County Road 15.

These access points make it easier for people to enjoy the lake for activities like fishing or boating.
