Fisher's Station, also known as Carriage Point, was an important stop along two old travel routes. It served as a "stage stand" on the famous Butterfield Overland Mail route. It was also located on the Texas Road in what was then called Indian Territory.
This historic spot was found near the start of Island Bayou. Today, this area is part of Bryan County, Oklahoma. Back then, Island Bayou was a border. It separated the lands of the Chickasaw and Choctaw Nations.
From 1869 to 1871, a post office named Carriage Point operated here. Because of this, many people in the area still call the site Carriage Point. The Fisher family, who owned the station, were well-known members of the Choctaw Nation.
A Stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail
The Butterfield Overland Mail was a very long stagecoach route. It carried mail and passengers across the southern United States. It ran from 1858 to 1861. Stagecoaches were like large horse-drawn buses. They traveled long distances.
Fisher's Station was a vital stop on this route. It was a place where stagecoaches could rest. Horses could be changed here for fresh ones. Travelers could also get food and rest before continuing their journey.
The Texas Road
Fisher's Station was also on the Texas Road. This was another important route. It connected Missouri and Arkansas to Texas. Many people used this road. They traveled for trade, settlement, and other reasons.
The station's location was perfect. It was a crossroads for travelers. It helped connect different parts of the country.
A Place of History
Fisher's Station (Carriage Point) holds a special place in history. It reminds us of a time when travel was much harder. Stagecoaches were the main way to cross the country.
In 1972, Fisher's Station was recognized for its importance. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is a protected site. It helps us remember the past.
