Nail's Station was an important stop for stagecoaches in the past. It was located on the famous Butterfield Overland Mail route. This route was a major way to send mail and people across the country.

Nail's Station was also on the Texas Road. This was another important travel path in what was then called Indian Territory. Today, this area is Bryan County, Oklahoma.

What Was Nail's Station?

Nail's Station was like a rest stop for stagecoaches. It was sometimes known as Blue River Station or Nail's Crossing. This is because it was right next to the Blue River.

The station was run by a man named Joel H. Nail. He was part of a well-known Choctaw family. These stations were vital for travelers and mail carriers. They offered a place to rest, eat, and change horses.

The Butterfield Overland Mail Route

The Butterfield Overland Mail was a very long stagecoach service. It operated from 1858 to 1861. It carried mail and passengers between the eastern and western United States. This was before trains reached everywhere.

Stations like Nail's were placed about every 10 to 15 miles along the route. They made it possible for stagecoaches to travel quickly. Fresh horses were ready, and drivers could take a break.

A Historic Place: National Register

Nail's Station is recognized as a historic site. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. This list includes places that are important to American history.

Being on the National Register helps protect these sites. It makes sure their stories can be remembered. Nail's Station played a role in the history of transportation and communication.
