About Fito Páez
His Early Life and Music Beginnings
Fito Páez was born in Rosario, Santa Fe, Argentina. His full name is Rodolfo Páez, just like his father. When he was a child, people called him "Rodolfito." This was a way to tell him apart from his dad. Over time, "Rodolfito" became "Fito," which is now his stage name.
Fito started his first band, Staff, when he was only 13 years old. In 1977, he played in another band called El Banquete. The next year, he began performing by himself in local pubs.
After finishing high school, Fito toured with different bands. Soon after, he released his first solo album, Del '63, in 1984. This album first became popular in his hometown. Later, it gained attention in Buenos Aires, Argentina's capital. Many talented Argentine musicians helped him create this record.
This first album showed everyone that Fito was a great songwriter. It also led to more music projects. In 1985, he released Giros. A famous musician named Luis Alberto Spinetta loved the demo for this album. This led to Fito and Spinetta working together. Their album, La La La, came out in 1986. They even toured to support it, playing concerts as far as Santiago, Chile.
In 1987, Fito released Ciudad de Pobres Corazones. This album had a more serious and thoughtful tone. He dedicated it to his aunt and grandmother, who had passed away in Rosario. Fito also started producing music for others. His album Ey!, released in 1988, was recorded in New York City and Havana. It featured many musicians he had worked with before.
Success and Later Career
Fito's 1990 album, Tercer Mundo, explored Latin American culture. It also looked at the tough parts of the world, like poverty. This album was praised by critics. But it was his 1992 album, El Amor Después del Amor, that became a huge hit. This album sold over 750,000 copies! When Fito toured for this album, he played sold-out shows for 40,000 people. After the album came out, he played a special concert to raise money for UNICEF. This concert raised more than $420,000.
In 1990, Fito also helped produce an album for Sandra Mihanovich and Celeste Carballo called Mujer contra mujer.
His next album, Circo Beat, released in 1994, had very high expectations. It had several popular songs, like "Mariposa Technicolor." It also had a special version called Circo Beat Brazil, with Brazilian remixes. While it sold well, around 350,000 copies, it didn't reach the same huge numbers as El Amor Después del Amor.
Fito continued to release many projects in the late 1990s. These included a live album called Euforia. In 1998, he released Sabina & Páez: Enemigos Intimos with Joaquín Sabina. In 1999, he released another well-produced album, Abre. He also won two Grammys at the first Latin Grammy Awards in 2000. Fito and actress Cecilia Roth adopted a child in 1999.
Fito's 2003 album, Naturaleza sangre, brought him back to his earlier musical style. It featured other famous artists like Charly García, Luis Alberto Spinetta, and Brazilian artist Rita Lee. In 2006, Fito received a special gift called an escopetarra. This was a guitar made from a decommissioned rifle, given to him by a peace activist. It was a way to honor his music.
His album El mundo cabe en una canción won a Latin Grammy Award for Best Rock Solo Vocal Album in 2007. In 2008, Fito recorded No se si es Baires o Madrid in Madrid, Spain. He invited many important musicians to join him on this album. In 2010, he released Confiá. In 2011, he recorded Canciones para áliens, an album where he performed songs by other artists. These "songs for the aliens" were even sent into space using electromagnetic waves in 2012! In 2021, Fito Páez received the Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. This award celebrates his amazing career and contributions to music.
