About Fito Páez

His Early Life and Music Journey

Fito Páez was born in Rosario, Argentina. His real name is Rodolfo Páez, just like his father. When he was a child, people called him "Rodolfito" to tell him apart from his dad. Over time, "Rodolfito" became "Fito," which is now his stage name.

Fito started his first band, Staff, when he was only 13 years old. In 1977, he played in another band called El Banquete. The next year, he began performing by himself in small clubs.

After finishing high school, Fito toured with different bands. Soon after, he released his first solo album, Del '63, in 1984. This album first became popular in his hometown. Later, it gained attention in Buenos Aires, Argentina's capital. Many talented Argentine musicians helped him create this record. The album showed everyone that he was a great songwriter.

Growing Success and Collaborations

His success led to more projects. In 1985, he released the album Giros. A famous musician named Luis Alberto Spinetta liked the demo of this album. This led to Fito's next album, La La La, in 1986, which was a duet with Spinetta. They toured together, even performing in Santiago, Chile.

In 1987, Fito released Ciudad de Pobres Corazones. This album had a darker, more political feel. He dedicated it to his aunt and grandmother, who had passed away. In 1988, he tried his hand at producing music with his album Ey!. He recorded this album in New York City and Havana. Many musicians he had worked with before also joined him on this project.

Major Achievements and Later Works

In 1990, Fito released Tercer Mundo. This album explored Latin American cultures and the challenges of poverty. It was highly praised by critics. However, his 1992 album, El Amor Después del Amor, became his biggest commercial hit. It sold over 750,000 copies. When Fito toured to support this album, he played to huge crowds of 40,000 people. After this album came out, he performed a benefit concert for UNICEF, raising over $420,000 for a good cause.

In 1990, Fito also worked as a producer for the album Mujer contra mujer.

His next album, Circo Beat, released in 1994, had very high expectations. It had popular songs like "Mariposa Technicolor." Even though it sold about 350,000 copies, it didn't reach the same sales as El Amor Después del Amor. Fito continued to create music in the late 1990s. This included a live album called Euforia and Sabina & Páez: Enemigos Intimos in 1998, which was with Joaquín Sabina. In 1999, he released another well-produced album, Abre. He won two Grammys at the first Latin Grammy Awards in 2000.

Fito's 2003 album, Naturaleza sangre, brought him back to his earlier musical style. It featured other famous artists like Charly García and Luis Alberto Spinetta. In 2006, Fito received a special guitar called an escopetarra. This unique guitar was made from a decommissioned AK-47 rifle. It was given to him by a Colombian musician to honor his music and his message of peace.

His album El mundo cabe en una canción won a Latin Grammy Award in 2007. In 2008, Fito recorded No se si es Baires o Madrid in Madrid, Spain. He invited many important musicians to join him on this album. In 2010, he released Confiá. In December 2011, he recorded Canciones para áliens, an album where he performed songs by other artists. These "songs for the aliens" were even sent into space in January 2012 as part of the Music to Space project. In 2021, Fito Páez received the Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award for his amazing career.
