The five-striped sparrow (Amphispiza quinquestriata) is a medium-sized bird. It is a type of American sparrow. These sparrows are known for their unique stripes.
Where Five-Striped Sparrows Live
These birds mostly live in Mexico. You can find them along the eastern Gulf of California and the Pacific Ocean coast. Their breeding areas also reach into the southern part of Arizona in the United States.
They also live in the Sierra Madre Occidental mountains. This includes special areas called "Madrean sky islands." These are like isolated mountain forests. You might also see them in southwestern New Mexico and northern Sonora, Mexico.
Nesting Habits and Challenges
The five-striped sparrow faces a challenge when it comes to nesting. It is often a victim of cowbirds. Cowbirds are known for being "nest parasites."
This means that cowbirds lay their eggs in the nests of other birds. The five-striped sparrow then ends up raising the cowbird chicks. This can be tough for the sparrow parents. They might not have enough food for their own babies.
