Architect Emery Roth & Sons

Five Penn Center is a tall, 36-story office building in downtown Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is part of a group of buildings called the Penn Center complex. This complex was designed by a famous architect named Edmund Bacon.

Five Penn Center was once one of the tallest buildings in Philadelphia. This was before many new, very tall buildings were built in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Like other buildings in the Penn Center complex, it connects to Suburban Station through an underground walkway. This makes it easy for people to get around.

Building Design and History

Who Designed Five Penn Center?

The building was designed by the architectural firm Emery Roth & Sons. Another architect, Vincent G. Kling, also helped with the design. Vincent G. Kling also designed the Philadelphia Mint, which is where coins are made.

A Clever Marketing Idea

In 1986, many buildings in the Penn Center complex got new names based on their street addresses. Five Penn Center was one of them. It is the largest building in the Penn Center group. It is also right across Market Street from One Liberty Place, another very tall building that was being built at the time.

To attract new businesses, the building owners came up with a clever idea. They offered office space for rent at $16.01 per square foot each year. This was a marketing trick based on the building's address, which is 1601 Market Street.

What's Inside Today?

Today, several big companies have offices in Five Penn Center. Some of these include The Neat Company, KPMG, and WeWork. In the summer of 2006, the main entrance area, called the lobby, was updated and made to look more modern.
