Flattop Mountain is a cool mountain located in the North Carolina High Country, right next to the village of Sugar Mountain. It's completely inside the beautiful Pisgah National Forest. This mountain stands tall at about 4,944 feet (which is about 1,507 meters) above sea level!
Because it's so close to Sugar Mountain, people sometimes think they are the same mountain. But Flattop Mountain is its own unique peak!
Where is Flattop Mountain Located?
Flattop Mountain is found in Avery County, which is part of the state of North Carolina in the United States. It's part of the famous Blue Ridge Mountains, which are known for their misty, blue appearance.
The mountain is entirely within the Pisgah National Forest. This means the land around it is protected and managed for nature and recreation.
What Makes Flattop Mountain Special?
Flattop Mountain is important for its water sources. Streams that start on the mountain flow directly into the Linville River. However, on the north side of the mountain, a stream called Flattop Creek flows into the Elk River.
The mountain is also divided by something called the Eastern Continental Divide. This is an imaginary line that runs through North America. On one side, water flows towards the Atlantic Ocean, and on the other side, it flows towards the Gulf of Mexico. It's like a giant watershed!
Visiting Flattop Mountain
If you visit Flattop Mountain, you might find the Linville Ridge Golf and Country Club. It's located right on the top of the mountain and is usually open from late spring to early fall. It's a place where people can enjoy the views while playing golf.
