A Look at Flatwoods' History
Flatwoods became an official town in 1902. But maps show it existed as early as 1873. A church was even started there in 1830 by a pastor named John Clark.
Later, in the late 1800s, a railroad line came through Flatwoods. This line was first part of the West Virginia and Pittsburgh Railroad. It was later taken over by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O). Flatwoods was a midway point on the B&O's route between Clarksburg and Richwood.
Flatwoods became famous across the country because of a strange event. On September 12, 1952, something unusual happened. It was called the Flatwoods monster UFO incident. People reported seeing a strange creature and a bright object in the sky. This story made the town well-known!
