Flavio Roma's Football Journey
Flavio Roma began his football journey in the youth teams of Lazio. He was a third-choice goalkeeper there. Later, he moved to play for clubs in Italy's lower leagues, Serie B and Serie C1. In 1999, he joined Serie A team Piacenza. He became their main goalkeeper, but the team was relegated to a lower league that season.
Playing for AS Monaco
In 2001, Flavio Roma moved to France to play for Monaco. He quickly became the team's top goalkeeper. He even played in the 2004 UEFA Champions League Final, which is a huge European club competition. During his time at Monaco, he had some injuries. For example, a shoulder injury kept him out for half of the 2001–02 season. He also missed three months in the 2005–06 season. Flavio Roma was very loyal to Monaco. He even turned down a chance to join the English club Arsenal to sign a new contract with Monaco.
Time with A.C. Milan
On August 12, 2009, Flavio Roma signed a one-year contract with Milan, a very famous Italian club. He was excited to join Milan, calling it a "dream come true." He hoped to compete for a starting spot. However, other goalkeepers like Marco Storari and Dida were often chosen ahead of him. When Christian Abbiati recovered from an injury, Flavio Roma became the third-choice goalkeeper. In 2011, he played in two Coppa Italia matches. He kept a "clean sheet" (meaning he didn't let any goals in) against Bari. On May 17, 2011, Milan extended his contract for another year. On May 13, 2012, Flavio Roma announced that he had played his last game for Milan.
Back to Monaco
On August 2, 2012, Flavio Roma returned to Monaco on a one-year deal. Monaco was promoted to Ligue 1, the top French league, that season. Flavio Roma made his first appearance in his second spell with Monaco as a substitute. Monaco won that game 2–1 against Tours. After making one appearance, he signed another contract extension. At the end of the season, he decided to retire from playing football.
Playing for Italy
Flavio Roma was called up to play for the Italian national team for the first time on November 17, 2004. He made his debut on March 30, 2005, in a friendly match against Iceland. The game ended in a 0–0 draw. He played his first full match for Italy on June 11, 2005, against Ecuador. Due to injuries, he was not able to join the team for warm-up games before the 2006 FIFA World Cup. His last call-up for Italy was on August 16, 2006.
Coaching Career
After retiring as a player, Flavio Roma became a goalkeeping coach. From 2017 to 2020, he worked for his former club AS Monaco, coaching their youth goalkeepers. In 2022, he became the new goalkeeping coach for AC Milan, another one of his old clubs. However, he left AC Milan after just one year.
