Flor de Caña is a special brand of rum made in Nicaragua. Its name means "sugarcane flower" in Spanish. This company, Compañía Licorera de Nicaragua, has been making rum for a very long time, starting way back in 1890. Their main office is in Managua, the capital city of Nicaragua.

The Story of Flor de Caña

The company that makes Flor de Caña, called Compañía Licorera de Nicaragua, S.A. (CLNSA), began its journey in 1890. They first wanted to grow a lot of sugarcane. Sugarcane is a tall grass used to make sugar and other products.

They built their first factory, called a distillery, in a town called Chichigalpa. This town is about 120 kilometers (about 75 miles) from Managua. It's located near the base of a volcano called San Cristóbal Volcano.

Growing the Business

Even though the distillery was built early, Flor de Caña was officially introduced to the Nicaraguan market in 1937. The first two types of rum they sold were called Flor de Caña Etiqueta Amarilla and Flor de Caña Etiqueta Roja.

By 1959, Flor de Caña started to be sold in other countries. It was exported to Venezuela, Costa Rica, and other countries in Central America. Between 1963 and 1965, the factory in Chichigalpa was updated with new, modern equipment.

Challenges and Growth

A few years later, in 1973, a second distillery was built in Honduras. During the 1980s, Nicaragua went through a difficult time called the Nicaraguan Revolution. Because of this, Flor de Caña stored a lot of its aged rum.

By 1990, Flor de Caña had the largest collection of aged rum in the world. This meant they had many barrels of rum that had been carefully stored for a long time. In 1996, the main distillery in Chichigalpa was completely updated again.

Modern Activities

Today, the company helps sponsor fun events. They support the Flor de Caña Open, which is a golf tournament. They also sponsor international competitions where people mix drinks, and fishing tournaments held by the International Game Fish Association.

How Flor de Caña Rum is Made

Flor de Caña rum goes through a special process to be made. It is distilled five times. Distilling is a way of purifying liquids, making the rum very smooth.

Aging Process

After distillation, each rum is aged in a special barrel. These barrels are made of oak wood and have been burned on the inside, which is called "charred." Before Flor de Caña uses them, these barrels were used to age bourbon whiskey. This gives the rum a unique flavor.

The company also makes sure its rums follow kosher standards. This means they are prepared according to certain rules. Some of their rums are aged for a very long time, even up to 25 years!

Product Varieties and Design

Flor de Caña offers many different types of rum. Their current collection includes five premium rums, two super-premium rums, and three ultra-premium rums. In 2013, the company changed the design of its bottles.

The new bottles show the awards the rum has won. They also feature a picture of a volcano. This volcano represents the rich, volcanic soil in Nicaragua where the sugarcane grows. Flor de Caña rums are sold in 43 different countries around the world. The company's special symbol, showing medals and the San Cristobal Volcano, is on every bottle.

Flor de Caña makes both white rum and dark rum. In 2018, the company received a special certification called fair trade from Fair Trade USA. This means they follow fair practices for their workers and the environment.
