History of Flor de Caña
How the Company Started
The story of Flor de Caña began in 1890. The company, Compañía Licorera de Nicaragua, first wanted to create a large sugarcane farm. They built their very first distillery in a town called Chichigalpa. This town is about 120 kilometers (75 miles) from Managua. It is located right at the base of the San Cristóbal Volcano.
Growing the Brand
Even though the distillery was built early, the Flor de Caña brand was officially launched in Nicaragua in 1937. The first two types of rum introduced were Flor de Caña Etiqueta Amarilla and Flor de Caña Etiqueta Roja.
Expanding to Other Countries
By 1959, Flor de Caña started to be sold outside Nicaragua. It was first exported to countries like Venezuela, Costa Rica, and other nations in Central America. Between 1963 and 1965, the distillery in Chichigalpa was updated with new technology. A few years later, in 1973, a second distillery was built in Honduras.
During the 1980s, a lot of Flor de Caña rum was stored away. By 1990, the company had the largest collection of aged rum in the world. The distillery in Chichigalpa was fully modernized again in 1996.
Modern Activities
Today, the company supports various events. They sponsor the Flor de Caña Open, which is a golf tournament. They also support international competitions where people mix drinks. In addition, they sponsor fishing tournaments organized by the International Game Fish Association.
How Flor de Caña Rum is Made
The Distilling Process
Flor de Caña rum goes through a special process. It is distilled five times to make it very pure. After distilling, each rum is aged in a special barrel. These barrels are made of oak wood and have been burned inside. They were also used before to age bourbon whiskey. This process helps give the rum its unique flavor.
Aging and Quality
The company ages its rums for many years, some for as long as 25 years. Flor de Caña also makes sure its products meet kosher standards. The company offers different types of rum, including premium, super-premium, and ultra-premium options.
Bottle Design and Distribution
In 2013, the company updated the design of its bottles. The new design shows the awards the rum has won. It also features a picture of a volcano, which represents the rich volcanic soil of Nicaragua where the sugarcane grows. Flor de Caña rums are now sold in 43 different countries around the world. The brand's symbol, showing medals and the San Cristobal Volcano, is on every bottle.
Flor de Caña Products
Flor de Caña makes both light-colored (white) and dark-colored rums. In 2018, the company became fair trade certified through Fair Trade USA. This means they follow fair practices in their production.
