History of Florence

Before European settlers arrived, the area around Florence was home to the Menominee people. They used the land for hunting and trapping.

In the 1870s, something important was discovered here: iron! The Florence Mine was found in October 1874 by H. D. Fisher. The mine was named in 1879 after Florence Terry Hulst, who was the wife of Nelson Powell Hulst.

A letter from J. J. Hagerman on December 15, 1879, explained the naming:

We all wish to call the new town and the mine Florence, to honor the first white woman who had courage enough to settle (for a while) in that rugged country.
I mean the first white woman known to us.
Will you permit your name to be used?

Later, the entire county was also named Florence, after the town and the mine.
