Florence Frances Huberwald was born in New Orleans. Her family had a long history in the city. Her mother's family came from Connecticut and St. Augustine, Florida. Her father's family was from Germany. Florence's aunt, Caroline Hubbard, was a very respected principal at the New Orleans High School.

Florence went to school at the Sylvester-Larned Institute for Young Ladies. She studied singing in New York City, Paris, and London. In Paris, she learned from a famous singer named Anna La Grange.

Career and Achievements

Florence Huberwald first worked as a public school teacher. She was very good at it. In 1894, she went to the state legislature to help teachers get their unpaid wages.

She was a talented singer. One special moment was when she sang in a fancy room in Paris. She also managed the singing part of the program for the Louisiana State concert at the Cotton States and International Exposition in 1895. This concert was a huge success for Louisiana. Florence also gave a notable speech at the 1895 General Federation of Women's Clubs convention.

Florence was the only singer from New Orleans at the Cotton States Exposition. She received a standing ovation for her performance. She had a deep contralto voice that could reach over two octaves.
