Florida is a special neighborhood, called a barrio, located on the beautiful island of Vieques, Puerto Rico. In 2010, about 3,821 people lived here. It's a part of the larger island-municipality of Vieques.

A Look Back: History of Florida

After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States in 1898. This happened because of a special agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became a territory of the United States. This means it's connected to the U.S. but isn't a state.

In 1899, the United States government counted everyone living in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. They found that Florida and a nearby area called Pueblo had a combined population of 2,646 people.
