Where Does Fly Creek Flow?
Fly Creek flows south through the countryside. It passes by the small community called Fly Creek. Eventually, it joins up with another stream, Oaks Creek, just south of the community.
The Famous Cider Mill
One of the most interesting spots along Fly Creek is the Fly Creek Cider Mill and Orchard. This historic mill sits right next to the creek. It uses the flowing water from Fly Creek to help make delicious cider! It's the last working mill of its kind in that area. Part of Fly Creek is also found within the Fly Creek Historic District. This means the area has important historical buildings and places.
How Did Fly Creek Get Its Name?
Have you ever wondered how Fly Creek got its unique name? There's a cool theory about it! Long ago, around 1714, Dutch traders traveled through this region. They were on their way to Otsego Lake.
The Dutch word for "marsh" is "vlie." Fly Creek actually starts in a marshy area to its north. So, it's very likely that those early Dutch traders called it "Vlie Creek." Over time, "Vlie Creek" changed into what we know today as "Fly Creek."
