What Does a Fog Shrew Look Like?

The fog shrew, also known as Sorex sonomae, is the largest shrew found along the Pacific Coast of the United States. It has fur that is a reddish, light-brown color. Its tail is also mostly the same color as its body.

Fog shrews have many small teeth. An adult fog shrew usually measures between 120 and 158 millimeters long. That's about the length of a pen! Some have been seen as long as 180 millimeters. They are also quite light, weighing between 5.5 and 18 grams. This is about the weight of a few paper clips.

Where Do Fog Shrews Live?

Fog shrews live in specific types of places. They can be found in areas with "chaparral," which are thick bushes. They also live in coastal forests with cone-bearing trees. You might also find them in marshy areas.

These shrews love moist environments. They often live near creeks. You can also find them on the forest floor under fallen trees and other natural debris.

The southernmost place where fog shrews live is Marin County, near the city of Sonoma in California. Their range extends north to the central coast of Oregon. They tend to stay close to the coast. They usually do not travel far inland unless there is a body of water nearby.

What Do Fog Shrews Eat?

Like most shrews, the fog shrew is an insectivore. This means it mainly eats insects and other small creatures. Their diet mostly includes centipedes and spiders. They have also been known to eat slugs and snails.
