The Forks River is a river located in northeastern Ontario, Canada. It flows for about 36 kilometres (22 mi) (22 miles). This river is part of the larger James Bay and Moose River drainage systems. It starts at Forks Lake and ends at Night Hawk Lake.
Journey of the Forks River
The Forks River begins at Forks Lake. This lake is found in the western part of the Timiskaming District. The river starts at a high point, about 351 metres (1,152 ft) (1,152 feet) above sea level. From Forks Lake, the river flows east into Lower Forks Lake.
Interestingly, parts of both Forks Lake and Lower Forks Lake are in three different districts of Ontario. These are Cochrane, Timiskaming, and Sudbury. This means the river's starting area covers parts of all three districts.
After leaving the lakes, the Forks River heads northeast, then turns north. It flows over a small dam along its path. A smaller stream called Little Forks Creek joins the Forks River from the left side. This creek comes from Little Forks Lake.
The river then turns northwest before curving back towards the northeast. Finally, it flows into the city of Timmins in Cochrane District. The Forks River reaches its end at St. Peter Bay, which is at the southern tip of Night Hawk Lake. Here, the river is about 274 metres (899 ft) (899 feet) above sea level.
