Forsyth Township is a local government area in Marquette County, Michigan. It is located in the U.S. state of Michigan. In 2020, about 6,194 people lived here. The township was named after O. F. Forsyth. He was an important person for a mining company in the area.
Communities and Towns
Forsyth Township is home to several smaller communities. These are places where people live and work.
- Gwinn is a main community in the township. It is a place where the census collects information. This area also includes the nearby community of New Swanzy.
- A part of the old K. I. Sawyer Air Force Base is also in the township. This was once a large air force base.
- Austin is a community located west of Gwinn. It is found across the Middle Branch of the Escanaba River.
- Princeton is another community. It is located northwest of Austin.
- Little Lake is a community found along M-35. It is about four miles east of Gwinn. This community started in 1863 around a mill and a store. The train station here was first called Cheshire Junction. The community was named Little Lake because it is close to a small body of water. It got its own post office in 1877, named Forsyth. Most of this area, about 177.76 square miles (460.40 square kilometers), is land. The rest, about 5.09 square miles (13.18 square kilometers), is water. This means about 2.78% of the township is covered by water.
