The Fortier River is a small river in Quebec, Canada. It flows into the Panache River. The Fortier River is located in the Eeyou Istchee James Bay (municipality) area, which is part of the Nord-du-Québec region.

The river flows through two areas called Urban and Carpiquet. The main activity in this region is forestry, which means cutting down trees for wood. Tourism, like visiting for fun, is also important. A forest road, the R1051, runs near the river.

The Fortier River usually freezes over in early November and stays frozen until mid-May. However, it's generally safe to walk or travel on the ice from mid-November to mid-April.

Fortier River's Journey

The Fortier River starts in an unnamed lake in the Eeyou Istchee James Bay (municipality) area. This lake is about 418 meters (1,371 feet) above sea level. The lake is near a mountain that is 502 meters (1,647 feet) high.

The river flows for about 17.3 kilometers (10.7 miles). Here's how it travels:

  • First, it flows south for about 2.9 kilometers (1.8 miles).
  • Then, it turns west for about 6.1 kilometers (3.8 miles). During this part, it flows through two lakes: First Fortier Lake and Second Fortier Lake. Both lakes are about 389 meters (1,276 feet) above sea level.
  • After that, the river flows southwest through a marshy area for about 4.8 kilometers (3 miles).
  • Finally, it continues southwest for about 3.5 kilometers (2.2 miles) until it reaches its end.

The Fortier River eventually joins the Panache River. The Panache River then flows into the Wetetnagami River. The Wetetnagami River flows north to Nicobi Lake. From Nicobi Lake, the water goes into the Nicobi River, which flows into the Opawica River. The Opawica River meets the Chibougamau River, forming the Waswanipi River. This long river system eventually leads to Lake Waswanipi, then Goéland Lake, and Olga Lake. Finally, the water reaches Lake Matagami, which flows into the Nottaway River. The Nottaway River empties into Rupert Bay, which is part of James Bay.

What's in a Name?

The name "Fortier River" became official on December 5, 1968. This was decided by the Commission de toponymie du Québec, which is the official group in Quebec that names places.
