Fountain City, once known as Newport, is a small town in Wayne County, Indiana. It is located in New Garden Township. In 2010, about 796 people lived there.

History of Fountain City
Fountain City was first settled in 1818. It was originally called New Garden. In 1834, its name changed to Newport.
The town was renamed Fountain City in 1878. This new name came from the many natural springs found in the area. Fountain City officially became a town in 1844. The town's post office has been open since 1878.
The Famous Levi Coffin House

Fountain City is home to the Levi Coffin House. This historic house belonged to Levi Coffin and his wife, Catherine. They were Quakers, a religious group known for their peaceful beliefs.
Levi Coffin was a strong supporter of ending slavery. He was often called the "president" of the Underground Railroad. This was a secret network of safe houses and routes. It helped enslaved people escape to freedom in the North. The Coffin House was a very important stop on this route. Today, you can visit it as an Indiana State Historic Site.
