Foxes Tarn is a very small lake found high up in the Lake District in England. It sits just east of the top of Sca Fell, one of England's tallest mountains.

About Foxes Tarn

Foxes Tarn is one of the smallest lakes, or tarns, that has a name in the Lake District. A tarn is a small mountain lake, often formed in a hollow created by glaciers.

A High-Up Lake

This tarn is also one of the highest named tarns in the Lake District. It is either the highest or very close to the highest, along with nearby Broadcrag Tarn. Some experts have different ideas about which one is truly higher. There is an even higher unnamed tarn on a mountain called Long Top, which is part of the Crinkle Crags.

Size and Water Flow

Foxes Tarn can change in size depending on the weather. It does not have much water flowing out of it. The small amount of water that does leave the tarn flows down to How Beck and then into the River Esk.

A Stop for Mountain Walkers

Many people who enjoy walking in the mountains know Foxes Tarn well. This is because it is on a popular path between Scafell Pike and Scafell. These are the two highest mountains in England.

There is a direct path between the mountains called Broad Stand. However, this route is only safe for people who are skilled at rock climbing. For regular walkers, there are two main choices. One way is through a path called Lord's Rake. The other way involves going down to Foxes Tarn before climbing back up. The tarn is lower than the pass between the mountains, called Mickledore. This means the Foxes Tarn route is easier to walk, but it requires more climbing back uphill.
