Francine Furaha Muyumba, born on February 18, 1987, is a well-known activist and politician from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). She currently serves as a Senator in the Congolese government. Before this, she was the president of the Panafrican Youth Union, which is the official youth group of the African Union. She held this important role from November 2015 to April 2019.

Early Life and Activism

Francine Muyumba finished her university studies at the University of Namibia in 2011. While there, she was very involved in student leadership. In her final year, she was chosen to be the president of the Student Representative Council (SRC). This was a big deal because she was the first international student to ever hold that position.

During her time in Namibia, Francine also worked with the United Nations Association. After her studies, she returned to her home country, the DRC, to help young people there from 2012 to 2014. Because of her experience helping youth around the world, she often speaks about youth issues, even at the United Nations.

She also led the National Federation of Youth Entrepreneurs in the DRC. She helped young people in the African Great Lakes region of Africa work together for peace. Her dedication to youth rights led her to become the first female president of the Panafrican Youth Union. This organization represents all young people across Africa under the African Union.

Leading the Panafrican Youth Union

Francine Muyumba was elected president of the Panafrican Youth Union (PYU) in 2014. The PYU is the main group that represents all African youth, which includes everyone under 35 years old. This age group makes up about 65 percent of Africa's population!

During her time as president, Francine worked hard to make the PYU stronger. She improved its relationship with the African Union Commission. Her goal was to make sure young African voices were heard in important decisions. She helped older and younger generations talk to each other. She also made sure young people's ideas were included in political matters across Africa.

Francine was the main person who spoke about youth issues to the African Union leaders. She worked with the African Union chairwoman, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma. Together, they created special funds to help young people develop across the continent.

She has always been a strong supporter of peace, both in her country and globally. Francine Muyumba encouraged young people to start their own businesses. She also pushed for more job opportunities for youth. She believed this would help bring peace and stability to Africa. She even spoke to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon about the needs of African youth. She was the first PYU president since 1962 to speak at the UN General Assembly for African youth.

As PYU president, Francine also worked with international groups and the African Union. She helped set goals for Africa's future, like those in Agenda 2063. She also supported the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. Francine often spoke at international events for young people and women. She met with leaders from the United States and the World Bank. These meetings helped create stronger partnerships to support young people in Africa.

In May 2018, Francine Muyumba attended an important economic meeting in Russia. There, she talked about how the world needs Africa, and Africa needs the world. In November 2019, she stepped down as President of the Panafrican Youth Union. She did this to start her new role as a Senator in the Congolese government.

Political Career

In March 2019, Francine Muyumba was chosen to be a Senator in the Senate of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. She was elected by the local assembly of Haut-Katanga. At 32 years old, she was one of the two youngest people elected to this important government body.

Personal Life

Francine Muyumba lives in Kinshasa, the capital city of the Democratic Republic of Congo. In July 2019, she married Patrick Nkanga. He was a spokesperson for Congo's former ruling party. They had a traditional wedding in Kinshasa.
