Francis Travers Dames-Longworth (born April 26, 1834 – died December 3, 1898) was an important Anglo-Irish lawyer and public official. He held several key positions in Ireland during the 19th century, helping to manage local affairs and justice.

Early Life and Education

Francis Dames-Longworth was the son of Francis Longworth-Dames and Anna Hume. He received a good education, first attending Cheltenham College. After that, he studied at Trinity College Dublin, a famous university in Ireland.

In 1855, he completed his legal training and was officially allowed to practice law. This is called being "called to the Irish Bar". He became a lawyer, ready to work in the legal system.

A Career in Law and Public Service

Francis Dames-Longworth had a successful career, both as a lawyer and in public service. He took on many important roles that helped govern different parts of Ireland.

Becoming a Senior Lawyer

In 1872, Dames-Longworth was recognized for his legal skills. He was made a Queen's Counsel. This title meant he was a very senior and respected lawyer, chosen to advise the Crown (the government).

A few years later, in 1876, he was chosen as a Bencher of the King's Inns. The King's Inns is a special place for lawyers in Ireland, and a Bencher is like a leader or a senior member of this legal society.

Serving as a Local Official

Dames-Longworth also worked as a Commission of the Peace for six different counties in Ireland. This role meant he was a local official, similar to a judge, who helped keep law and order in his community.

He also served as a High Sheriff in two different counties. A High Sheriff was a very important local official responsible for maintaining peace and carrying out legal duties.

Leading as Lord Lieutenant

One of his most significant roles was serving as a Lord Lieutenant. A Lord Lieutenant was the main representative of the British monarch (like a governor) in an Irish county. They were responsible for military matters, law enforcement, and local administration.

  • From 1883 to 1892, he was the Lord Lieutenant of King's County (now known as County Offaly).
  • From 1892 until his death in 1898, he served as the Lord Lieutenant of County Westmeath.
