Francisco López Acebal (born April 5, 1866, in Gijón – died September 5, 1933) was a Spanish writer. He wrote many novels and plays. He also worked as a journalist.

His Early Life and Studies

Francisco Acebal started school in his hometown of Gijón. He later studied in Madrid and earned a law degree. Even at 13, he began his writing journey with a local newspaper called El Comercio.

His big break came in 1900. He won first prize in a writing contest held by Blanco y Negro magazine. Famous writers like Benito Pérez Galdós were judges! After this, he wrote for many important newspapers and magazines. These included Blanco y Negro, Helios, Hojas Selectas, and ABC in Spain. He also wrote for papers in Latin America, like Journal of the Marina of Havana and La Nación in Buenos Aires.

His Career as a Writer and Editor

In 1901, Francisco Acebal started and led La Lectura. This was a very respected magazine about science and arts. He used the magazine to help new writers from the Generation of 98 become known.

He also helped create two famous book collections: Pedagogía Moderna (Modern Teaching) and Clásicos Castellanos (Classical Spanish Works). These projects were linked to new ideas about education. He worked closely with other important thinkers like Julián Juderías.

In 1907, he became a leader at the Board for Advanced Studies and Research. Here, he helped train new scientists.

His Published Works

Francisco Acebal's plays were influenced by famous writers like Benito Pérez Galdós. He turned some of Galdós's novels into plays. For example, his play El amigo Manso was very popular when it opened in 1917.

His novels are also very important. He used careful and beautiful language. Some of his novels, like Dolorosa (1904), were translated into English, French, Portuguese, and Dutch. He also left behind many works that were never published.
