About His Stories

Francisco Izquierdo Ríos was one of Peru's most important storytellers in the 20th century. He grew up in the Peruvian Amazonia, and his writing often showed the beautiful nature and everyday lives of people from that region. He mostly wrote short stories. His writing style was simple, but his stories were full of strong feelings and passion. Besides short stories, he also wrote poems and essays about books and literature. It's great that many of his books were made just for young readers!

His Life Journey

Francisco Izquierdo Ríos was born in Saposoa, a town in the high jungle of Peru. His parents, Francisco Izquierdo Saavedra and Silvia Rios Seijas, were local farmers. He had seven brothers, and one of them, Guillermo Izquierdo Rios, also became a writer.

After finishing high school in 1927, he went to college to study teaching. He graduated in 1930. While in college, he met a famous journalist named José Carlos Mariátegui. Together, they worked to bring cultural education to worker groups in Lima.

After college, Francisco Izquierdo Ríos became a teacher. He taught in many different towns across Peru, including Moyobamba (1931-1932), Chachapoyas (1932-1939), Yurimaguas (1939-1940), and Iquitos (1941-1943).

In 1943, he became an education inspector in the Maynas area. Later, he moved to Lima and became the director of a night school in Callao. He worked there for 21 years, from 1943 to 1964.

He also worked in the Ministry of Education, where he was in charge of the Folklore Department. There, he worked with another famous writer, José María Arguedas. In 1947, they published a book together called Peruvian Myths, Legends, and Tales.

In 1963, he became the head of the Publications Department at the House of Culture. He also helped judge the 1977 Casa de las Américas Prize, which is a big award for writers. From 1980 to 1981, he was the president of the National Association of Writers and Artists.
