Yurimaguas is a busy port town in the northeastern part of the Peruvian Amazon. It's located in the Loreto Region of Peru. People often call it the "Pearl of the Huallaga" (Perla del Huallaga) because it's a beautiful and important place.
This town sits where two big rivers, the Huallaga and Paranapura, meet in the warm, green rainforests. Yurimaguas is the main town for both Alto Amazonas Province and Yurimaguas District. In 2017, about 62,903 people lived there.
Exploring Yurimaguas
Yurimaguas has a long and interesting past. It's a fun place to visit, especially during its big yearly festival on August 15. This festival celebrates the Assumption of Mary, a Catholic holiday. The town has a strong connection to the Church and is home to the Apostolic Vicariate of Yurimaguas.
A famous plant expert named Richard Spruce visited Yurimaguas in 1855. Even today, the town is a key place for trade. Many local farmers, called ribereños, grow crops like sugar cane, bananas, cotton, tobacco, and manioc. Fishermen also bring their catches to sell here.
Connecting to the World
Yurimaguas is special because it's the last major town in the Loreto region that has a highway connecting it to the rest of Peru. A paved road now links Yurimaguas to Tarapoto and Moyobamba. These towns are located in the "high-jungle" or montaña, which is a tropical area in the Andes mountains.
The Moisés Benzaquén Rengifo Airport in Yurimaguas opened in 1937. However, it doesn't have many flights anymore. Most people in Yurimaguas travel by river. The town's ports are busy with trade. Goods like hardwoods, petroleum, and other products from the Andes mountains or the Pacific Coast are sent down the river to Iquitos and beyond. The Port Authority of Yurimaguas, called ENAPU, manages this international port.
Famous Buildings
Yurimaguas is proud of its amazing Cathedral. It was built by the Passionist Order and looks a lot like the Cathedral in Burgos, Spain.
