Still Life with Bread by Francisco de Palacios, 1648

Francisco de Palacios (1623 – January 1652) was a Spanish Baroque painter. He lived and worked in Madrid, Spain. Although he is not as famous as some other artists, his work is important for understanding Spanish art of his time.

Early Life and Work

Francisco de Palacios was born in 1623. For a long time, people only knew him from a few of his paintings. These included two small still life paintings. A still life is a painting of objects that don't move, like fruit, flowers, or everyday items.

These paintings were bought in Madrid in the late 1600s. People also knew two religious paintings by him. These were of Saint Onuphrius and Saint Francis of Assisi.

Discovering His Art

When his paintings were first seen, some experts thought they might be by famous artists like El Greco. This was because of their style. However, when they saw Palacios's signature, they realized he was the artist.

For many years, people thought Palacios only painted still life works. But later research showed he also painted portraits of people and beautiful landscapes.

Family Life

In January 1646, Francisco de Palacios married Josefa Berges. She was the daughter of another painter and paint seller, Francisco Berges. Both Francisco and Josefa were over 20 years old when they married.

They had two children together. In December 1651, Francisco became very ill. He made a will, which is a document that says what should happen to his belongings after he dies. This will showed that he had a good financial life.

Later Life and Death

Francisco de Palacios died in Madrid in January 1652. He lived on Alcala Street in the city. His will and the auction of his father's belongings (who died in 1672) gave more information about Palacios's paintings.

These documents mentioned many different types of paintings he created. He painted a portrait of a woman named Doña Teresa. He also created landscapes for a person named Juan Pastrana.

He even made a large religious painting for Jerome Gonzalez Bricianos. This painting showed the Virgin Mary, Saint Joseph, and the Infant Jesus.

Connection to Famous Artists

The Knight's Dream, a painting some experts now believe was painted by Palacios, not Pereda.

Some art experts believe Palacios might have been a student of the famous Spanish painter Diego Velázquez. This idea is supported by a detail in Palacios's will. He mentioned giving "Don Diego de Silva" (which is Velázquez's full name) a sword and dagger set.

Some art historians also think Palacios painted The Knight's Dream. This painting was traditionally thought to be by Antonio de Pereda. However, the way the hands are painted in The Knight's Dream is very delicate. This style is different from Pereda's usual work, which makes some experts think Palacios painted it.

The Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, where the painting is kept, still officially says Pereda painted it. However, new research by art historian Azanza Javier Lopez has greatly increased the number of known works by Palacios.
