Francis Xavier Aschenbrenner (born July 12, 1925 – died January 30, 2012) was a talented American football player. He played as a halfback for teams like the Chicago Hornets and the Montreal Alouettes. He was also a hero who served in the United States Navy during World War II.

Frank Aschenbrenner's Early Life

Frank Aschenbrenner was born in Germany on July 12, 1925. When he was just three years old, his family moved to the United States. They traveled by steamship and settled in Milwaukee. Frank started his college football journey at Marquette University.

Serving His Country

His studies were put on hold when World War II began. Frank joined the United States Naval Air Corps. While serving, he continued to play football. In 1944, he played for the team at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The next year, he played for the service team at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center. Famous coaches like Paul Brown and Bear Bryant coached him there.

Frank's College Football Success

After the war, Frank decided to finish his education. He went to Northwestern University. He became a huge star there. In 1947, he was picked in the NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was also drafted by the Buffalo Bills in another league. But Frank chose to stay in college.

Rose Bowl Hero

Frank's biggest college moment was the 1949 Rose Bowl. He was named the best player in the game! He ran for 119 yards. This included an amazing 73-yard run for a touchdown. That play started the scoring for his team.

Playing Professional Football

Even though he was drafted by NFL teams, Frank never played for the Steelers or Bills. His rights were traded to other teams. He finally played six games for the Chicago Hornets in 1949. The team tried to make him play defense, which was new for him. It didn't work out, and he was soon released.

After this, Frank spent two more years in the Navy Air Corps. In 1951, he played a short time for the Montreal Alouettes. This team was part of the Canadian Football League.

A Hall of Famer

In 1993, Frank Aschenbrenner received a great honor. He was inducted into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame. This shows how important his college football career was. He passed away on January 30, 2012, in Arizona.
