Frank Lee Beard (born June 11, 1949) is an American drummer. He is famous for being the drummer for the rock band ZZ Top for more than 50 years.
A Texas Beginning
Frank Beard was born in Frankston, Texas. He grew up in Texas and went to Irving High School in the city of Irving, Texas.
The Beat Behind ZZ Top

Before he was in ZZ Top, Frank Beard played in several other bands. One of these was called American Blues, where he played with Dusty Hill, who would also join ZZ Top.
In 1969, Beard joined a band called The Moving Sidewalks. This band soon changed its name to ZZ Top. It was Beard who introduced the band's singer, Billy Gibbons, to Dusty Hill. Together, the three musicians created their famous "Texas boogie-blues-rock" sound.
In 1971, they released their first album, called ZZ Top's First Album. On this album and their third album, Tres Hombres, Frank was called "Rube Beard" in the credits. On all other albums, he is credited by his real name, Frank Beard.
Life Outside the Band
In the late 1970s, after becoming very successful, Frank faced some personal challenges. He decided to take a break to focus on his health and well-being. The band ZZ Top also took a three-year break to support him.
Frank married Debbie Meredith in 1982, and they have three children. He lives in Richmond, Texas. He enjoys playing golf and often takes part in local tournaments and community events.
Interestingly, for many years Frank Beard was the only member of ZZ Top who did not have a long beard. His bandmates, Billy Gibbons and Dusty Hill, were famous for their very long beards. In 2013, Frank decided to grow a short beard of his own.
Frank's Drum Kit
As a professional drummer, Frank Beard uses specific brands for his instruments. This is called an endorsement. He plays Tama drums and Paiste cymbals. He also uses Promark drumsticks and Remo drumheads.
