A Life in Music
Frank Joseph Christian grew up in the Bywater neighborhood of downtown New Orleans, Louisiana. His family had a mixed background, which they called "cayudle." This is a Creole French word for someone with different ancestries. Frank's brothers, Charles and Emile Christian, were also professional musicians.
Young Talent
Frank showed a lot of musical talent when he was young. By the time he was a teenager, he was already playing several instruments professionally. These included the trumpet, clarinet, violin, and tuba.
Early Bands
Around 1908, Frank started playing with bandleader Papa Jack Laine. He became a very important part of Laine's bands. He also played with other famous bandleaders like Tom Brown and Johnny Fischer. Frank even led his own band during this time.
A Missed Opportunity
In 1916, Frank Christian had a big chance to join a new band. This band was going to Chicago to play. Frank agreed and even practiced with them. However, he decided to stay in New Orleans because he had many job offers there. He thought it was safer than leaving town.
Another musician named Nick LaRocca took Frank's place. This band later became the Original Dixieland Jass Band. They made the very first jazz recordings in 1917. Because Frank stayed in New Orleans, he missed being part of this historic moment.
Moving North
After hearing how successful the Original Dixieland Jass Band was, Frank decided to try his luck up north. He went to Chicago to play with Johnny Fischer and Anton Lada. Later, he moved to New York City. He had an offer to start a New Orleans-style band at a dance club called The Alamo.
When Frank arrived in New York, Nick LaRocca of the Original Dixieland Jass Band was worried about the competition. LaRocca offered Frank money and a train ticket to go back to New Orleans. But Frank turned him down.
The Original New Orleans Jazz Band
Frank then formed his own group called the Original New Orleans Jazz Band. He recorded music with them in 1918 and 1919. Frank was the first leader of this band. However, they later decided that the band's lively pianist, Jimmie Durante, should lead the group instead.
After Jimmie Durante's band broke up, Frank Christian continued to perform. He toured with Vaudeville shows, including with the famous performer Gilda Gray. He also played in many theater and dance bands throughout the 1920s.
Later Years and Death
Frank Christian eventually returned home to New Orleans. He spent his later years working there. He passed away in 1973.
