Emile Joseph Christian (born April 20, 1895 – died December 3, 1973) was an American jazz musician. People sometimes spelled his name Emil Christian. He was famous for playing the trombone. He also played the cornet and string bass. Emile Christian wrote many songs, like "Satanic Blues" and "Mardi Gras Parade".

A Musician's Life

Emile Christian was born in New Orleans. He grew up in the Bywater neighborhood. His family loved music. His older brother, Frank Christian, was a well-known trumpet player.

Emile started playing music when he was young. He played both the cornet and trombone. He played with bands led by Papa Jack Laine. In 1917, Emile moved to Chicago, Illinois. There, he played trombone with the Bert Kelly Jass Band.

In 1918, Emile went to New York City. He joined a famous group called the Original Dixieland Jass Band (ODJB). He took the place of Eddie Edwards. With the ODJB, Emile traveled to England. He added his song "Satanic Blues" to their music. He also made his first recordings with this band.

After a short time, Emile went to Europe. This was in the 1920s and 1930s. He played bass and trombone in many jazz bands. He played in cities like Berlin, Paris, and Stockholm. He even recorded music in Berlin. He also played with bands in Nice and Aix-les-Bains.

Emile Christian played with different kinds of bands. He played with both Black and White musicians. He played in Europe and even in India. He came back to the United States when World War II started.

In the 1950s, Emile moved back to New Orleans. He played with bands led by Leon Prima and Sharkey Bonano. He also led his own band. In 1957, he toured with the Louis Prima Band. Emile kept playing music in New Orleans until 1969. In his later years, he mostly played the string bass.

He passed away in New Orleans in 1973. He was 78 years old.
