Frank Tracy Griswold III (born September 18, 1937 – died March 5, 2023) was an American religious leader. He was the 25th head of the Episcopal Church in the United States. This church is part of the larger Anglican Communion.

Growing Up and Education

Frank Griswold was born in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. He went to St. Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire. He earned a degree in English literature from Harvard College in 1959.

He also studied at the General Theological Seminary. Later, he earned another degree in theology from Oriel College at Oxford University.

His Work as a Religious Leader

Griswold became a priest in 1963. He worked at three churches in Pennsylvania. From 1976, he served at St Martin-in-the-Fields in Philadelphia.

In 1987, he became the Bishop of Chicago. He held this important role until 1998. That year, he became the Presiding Bishop.

Important Roles and Dialogue

From 1998 to 2003, Griswold helped lead a group that talked about issues between the Anglican and Roman Catholic churches. He was also part of a committee for the 1998 Lambeth Conference. This is a meeting of bishops from the Anglican Communion.

He was very interested in interfaith dialogue. This means talking and understanding different religions. He served on the board of World Religious Leaders for the Elijah Interfaith Institute. This group brings together leaders from various faiths.

After Being Presiding Bishop

Griswold's time as Presiding Bishop ended on November 1, 2006. Katharine Jefferts Schori took over from him. She was the first woman to become a primate (a chief bishop) in the Anglican Communion.

After his term, Griswold continued to teach and give speeches. He also wrote books. He visited universities and seminaries in places like South Korea, Cuba, and Japan. He also taught at several schools in the United States.

Family Life and Passing

Frank Griswold and his wife, Phoebe Wetzel Griswold, lived in Philadelphia. They had two daughters, Eliza Griswold and Hannah McFarland. He was also a grandfather to three children.

Frank Griswold passed away in Philadelphia on March 5, 2023. He was 85 years old.

Awards and Recognitions

Griswold received special honorary degrees from many universities and seminaries. These included Harvard, Oxford, and Rikkyo University in Japan.

In 1997, Queen Elizabeth II made him an Associate Sub Prelate. This was for the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem.
