About His Family and Early Life
Frank Hillyard Newnes was born in Manchester, England. His father was George Newnes, a famous newspaper publisher. His father was also a Liberal MP, which means he was elected to represent people in the British Parliament. Frank's mother was Priscilla Newnes.
Frank had an older brother who sadly passed away when he was only eight years old. This loss greatly affected their father. Frank went to a private school before attending Clare College, Cambridge. He earned degrees in Arts and Law in 1897.
His Marriages
In 1913, Frank Newnes married Emmeline Augusta Louisa, also known as Lena. Her father, Sir Albert de Rutzen, was a very important judge in London. Lena Newnes became well-known for hosting social events and for her charity work. She raised a lot of money for different good causes. She was also honored as a Dame of Grace of the Order of St John of Jerusalem. Lena passed away in 1939.
Frank married again in 1946 to Dorothy Darlot. She was from Perth, Western Australia. Frank did not have any children from either of his marriages.
His Career in Business
After finishing university in 1897, Frank Newnes joined his father's publishing company, George Newnes Ltd. He eventually became the President of this company. He also became the Chairman of Country Life, Ltd. He was a director for other publishing companies too.
One of these companies published The Westminster Gazette. This newspaper supported the Liberal Party, just like his father did. The paper was known for its green color, which Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone himself approved.
Frank Newnes also had other business interests. He was on the boards of the Norwich Union Fire Insurance Society and Norwich Union Life Insurance Society. He also led other companies like Associated Weavers, Ltd. In 1898, he became a lawyer, but it's not known if he ever practiced law.
His Political Life
