Frank Hart Rich Jr. (born June 2, 1949) is an American writer and columnist. He is known for sharing his opinions on important topics. From 1980 to 2011, he worked at The New York Times newspaper. He has also helped create and produce TV shows and documentaries for HBO.
Currently, Rich is a writer for New York magazine. There, he writes articles about politics and culture. He also talks about the news of the week for the "Daily Intelligencer" section. He was an executive producer for the popular HBO comedy show Veep. He joined the show when it started in 2011. He also produced the HBO drama series Succession.

Early Life and Education
Frank Rich was born on June 2, 1949. He grew up in Washington, D.C.. His mother, Helene Fisher, was a schoolteacher and artist. His father, Frank Hart Rich, was a businessman. Rich went to public schools. He graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1967.
After high school, Rich went to Harvard College in Cambridge, Massachusetts. At Harvard, he was the leader of The Harvard Crimson, which is the university's daily student newspaper. Rich was a top student at Harvard. He was part of Phi Beta Kappa, an honor society. He also received a special travel scholarship. In 1971, he graduated with high honors. He earned a degree in American history and literature.
Career in Journalism
Before he joined The New York Times in 1980, Frank Rich worked at other places. He was a film and TV critic for Time magazine. He was also a film critic for The New York Post. He worked as a film critic and senior editor for New Times Magazine. In the early 1970s, he helped start the Richmond (Va.) Mercury newspaper.
Television Work
Since 2008, Rich has been a creative consultant for HBO. This means he helps start and develop new TV shows. He was an Executive Producer for Veep. This was a long-running comedy series. In 2011, he received the Goldsmith Career Award for Excellence in Journalism from Harvard University. Also in 2011, he was given an honorary doctorate from The New School. In 2016, he won the Mirror Award for Best Commentary. This award came from the Newhouse School at Syracuse University. In 2015, he was added to the Theater Hall of Fame.
Rich was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize twice. This was in 1987 and 2005. In 2010, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Silurians Press Club.
He has won several Emmy Awards for his TV work. He won in 2015, 2016, and 2017 for Veep. This show was named Outstanding Comedy Series. His son Simon Rich is a novelist and writer. He created the TV series Man Seeking Woman. He also wrote for Saturday Night Live. His other son, Nathaniel Rich, is also a novelist, journalist, and writer.

Frank Rich wrote a book about his own life called Ghost Light (2000). This book talks about his childhood in the late 1950s and 1960s in Washington, D.C.. It focuses on how much he loved theater throughout his life and how it influenced him.
