History of Franklin
Franklin, which was once called Franklin Centre, began to be settled in the late 1830s. Farmers like Alexander Cruickshank and German immigrants Henry and Jacob Abel were among the first to live there.
Early Beginnings
The first schoolhouse in Franklin was built on the Cruickshank farm in 1839. The town itself was officially planned out on March 21, 1840. James L. Scott and Samuel C. Reed were the people who designed the town. They hoped Franklin would become the main city of Lee County, but it never did.
Naming the City
The city was named after Benjamin Franklin, a very famous American inventor, writer, and statesman. In 1841, John Gandy and Jesse H. Catting were chosen as justices of the peace. A justice of the peace is a local official who handles minor legal cases and keeps the peace.
Growth and Development
In 1842, the first church in Franklin was built by the Methodists, a type of Christian church. Franklin grew because it was located along the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad. This railroad helped bring people and goods to the town.
Preston Nichols was elected as the first mayor of Franklin. He had been a circuit court judge for 36 years before becoming mayor. A circuit court judge travels to different locations to hear legal cases.
