Frans Krajcberg (born April 12, 1921 – died November 15, 2017) was an artist from Poland who later became a Brazilian citizen. He was known for his paintings, sculptures, engravings, and photographs. Krajcberg was also a strong voice for the environment. He showed how Brazilian forests were being destroyed. He often used burnt wood from illegal forest fires in his art to make this point.

Frans Krajcberg's Life Story

Frans Krajcberg was born in Kozienice, Poland, in 1921. He was a Polish Jew. During World War II, he fought in the Polish Army. After the war, he found safety in the Soviet Union. There, he studied engineering and art at the Leningrad State University. He also studied art in Germany.

In 1948, Krajcberg moved to Brazil. He took part in a big art show called the São Paulo Biennial in 1951. In the 1940s, he created abstract art, which uses shapes and colors instead of real objects. From 1948 to 1954, he traveled a lot. He visited Paris, Ibiza, and Rio de Janeiro. During this time, he started making art inspired by nature.

In 1956, Krajcberg settled in Rio de Janeiro. He shared an art studio with another artist, Franz Weissmann. The next year, he became a Brazilian citizen. In 1964, Krajcberg began making sculptures from cedar wood.

He made many trips to the Amazon rainforest and the Pantanal. These trips were important for his art. He took photos and wrote about the destruction of forests. He also collected materials for his artworks, like tree roots and burnt tree trunks. In the 1970s, his sculptures made from burnt wood became famous around the world.

His Home and Studio: Sítio Natura

From 1972 onwards, Krajcberg lived in the south of Bahia, a state in Brazil. His art studio was on a farm called Sítio Natura in Nova Viçosa. This place was very important for his work and his connection to nature.

When Frans Krajcberg Died

Frans Krajcberg passed away on November 15, 2017. He was 96 years old. He died at a hospital in Rio de Janeiro.
