Franz Anton Maulbertsch (born June 7, 1724 – died August 8, 1796) was an important Austrian painter and engraver. He was one of the most famous artists of the Rococo painting style. His work was very popular in German and Hungarian regions.

Early Life and Art Training

Franz Anton Maulbertsch was born in a town called Langenargen. He went to study art at the Academy of Vienna. There, he learned a lot from Paul Troger. Troger introduced him to the works of famous Venetian painters. These included artists like Piazzetta and Giovanni Battista Pittoni.

Learning from Master Painters

Maulbertsch also studied the beautiful wall paintings, called frescoes, by Sebastiano Ricci. These frescoes were in the Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna. He also spent time with Giambattista Tiepolo. Tiepolo was another well-known painter who worked in Würzburg starting in 1750. These experiences helped shape Maulbertsch's unique style.

Famous Works and Commissions

Maulbertsch was very good at painting frescoes. Because of his talent, he received many requests for his art. Most of his projects were for churches. He created amazing artworks for churches in places like Bicske and Kalocsa.

Art in Vienna and Beyond

In Vienna, he decorated the Michaelerkirche and the Piaristenkirche Maria Treu. His art also brightened up the Porta Coeli in Moravia. He worked at the Kroměříž Archbishop's Palace and the villa of Halbturn too. He even painted a portrait of Narcissus of Jerusalem. Franz Anton Maulbertsch passed away in Vienna in 1796.
