The Franz Beckenbauer Cup was a special yearly football match. It was named after a famous German football legend, Franz Beckenbauer. This friendly game was set up by Bayern Munich, a big football club from Germany. They played it before the main football season started. The match always took place at Bayern Munich's home stadium, the Allianz Arena in Munich. Bayern Munich would play against a different guest team each year.
The idea for this cup came after Bayern Munich played in a similar tournament called the Joan Gamper Trophy in 2006. Interestingly, Bayern Munich never managed to win their own cup!
Who Won the Franz Beckenbauer Cup?
The Franz Beckenbauer Cup was a friendly match. If the game ended in a draw after the normal playing time, there was no extra time. Instead, the winner was decided right away by a penalty shootout. This is when players take turns trying to score goals from the penalty spot.
