The Franz Beckenbauer Cup was a special friendly football match. It was played every year to honor Franz Beckenbauer, a famous German football player. His nickname was "Der Kaiser" (The Emperor) because he was so good!
This cup was set up by Bayern Munich, a big football club from Germany. They played against a different guest team each year at their home stadium, the Allianz Arena in Munich. The matches usually happened before the main football season started. Bayern Munich got the idea for this cup after playing in a similar friendly tournament called the Joan Gamper Trophy in 2006.

The Franz Beckenbauer Cup matches had simple rules. If the game was a draw after the normal playing time, the winner was decided right away by a penalty shootout. There was no extra time played, which means the game didn't go on longer than usual.
