Fred Bruemmer (born June 26, 1929 – died December 17, 2013) was a famous Latvian Canadian nature photographer and researcher. He spent his life traveling to cold, faraway places, especially the Arctic. He loved to photograph and study the people and animals who live there.

Fred also wrote more than a thousand articles for well-known magazines. These included Canadian Geographic, Natural History, National Geographic, and Smithsonian. He could speak nine different languages! Fred Bruemmer lived in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Early Life and Journey to Canada

Fred Bruemmer was born Friedrich Karl von Brümmer in Riga, Latvia. He came from a German family living in Latvia. When he was young, he went through very tough times during World War II. These experiences led him to move to Canada in 1951. He became a Canadian citizen in 1956. He even wrote a book called Survival - A Refugee Life in 2005 about his journey.

His Amazing Photography

Fred Bruemmer was best known for his incredible photos of nature. One of his most famous pictures was taken in 1964. It showed a cute white harp seal pup. This photo became so popular that it was chosen as one of the "Photographs that Changed the World."

Awards and Recognition

Fred Bruemmer received many important awards for his work. These honors recognized his amazing contributions to photography and research.

  • He became a Member of the Order of Canada in 1983. This is one of Canada's highest honors.
  • He received the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee medal in 1993.
  • He was a Fellow of the Arctic Institute of North America.
  • He received the North American Nature Photography Association Lifetime Award in 2003.
  • He was given an Honorary Doctoral Degree from the University of New Brunswick in 1989.
  • He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts.
