Fred Saunders (born June 13, 1951) is an American former professional basketball player. He played in the National Basketball Association (NBA).
College Basketball Days
Fred Saunders started his college basketball career at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in 1970. For three years there, he scored an average of 6.5 points per game.
Saunders then moved to Syracuse University for his final year of college in 1973. At Syracuse, he played as a power forward for the Orangemen team. He averaged 9.8 points per game. The Orangemen finished that season with a good record of 17 wins and 9 losses. They even made it to the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship tournament. While at Syracuse, Fred Saunders got the cool nickname "Chocolate Thunder." This was because of his special skyhook move. See Fred's College Stats
Playing in the NBA
In 1974, Fred Saunders was chosen by the Phoenix Suns in the NBA draft. He was the 31st player picked overall in the second round. He played as a power forward for the Suns. Later, he also played for the Boston Celtics during the 1970s. Check out Fred's NBA Stats
